What Is A Gastric Bypass?
The gastric bypass is one of the most well-known bariatric surgeries in the country. Sometimes referred to as "Roux-en-Y" or simply a "bypass," a gastric bypass is a procedure designed to boost weight loss efforts by reducing your stomach space and bypassing part of the small intestine. At Fernando E Bayron MD, we offer gastric bypass surgery as an option for Tamarac, FL individuals who have struggled with weight loss or who are at risk of severe health complications due to their weight. If you're looking for a long-term solution to shed pounds and haven't seen the results you want with diet and exercise, gastric bypass surgery may provide the help you need. To learn more, schedule a consultation with our team today.
How Does Gastric Bypass Surgery Work?
Our practice uses a sophisticated, robotic-assisted approach to gastric bypass surgery, which offers greater precision with less potential for scarring. After you've been sedated, our surgeon will make several small incisions around the abdomen. We'll use these openings to insert a small camera and the various tools we'll need to complete the procedure. During the surgery, we'll create a small stomach pouch that's big enough to hold about one ounce of food so that you will feel full much faster. Afterward, we'll cut and reconnect a portion of the small intestine to the new pouch. The process usually takes about 1 – 2 hours, and you'll likely need to stay for a few days in the hospital while we monitor your recovery. Most patients feel sore for days or weeks following gastric bypass surgery, but you can relieve any discomfort using pain medication (over-the-counter or prescription if necessary).
What Are the Benefits of Gastric Bypass Surgery?
A gastric bypass can be a powerful weight loss tool, especially when diet and exercise alone aren't producing noticeable changes in your body. Some of the advantages of gastric bypass surgery at Fernando E Bayron MD include:
- Helps patients achieve dramatic weight loss (up to 80% of excess weight)
- Alters the digestive process for long-term results
- Robotic-assisted approach minimizes risks of complications and scarring
- Effective at fighting obesity-related health complications, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, among others
Fernando E Bayron MD Reviews
Lovely new office. Pleasant staff. However as a gastric bypass patient having been seen for decades by this doctor and now having to deal with his PA who I had never seen or spoken too before wasn’t what I was expecting. That’s the reason I gave it 4 starts and not 5. I have issues that I need my doctor who has operated on me 3 times now to be there and not a new PA sorry to say. Call me Old school if you must

Am I A Candidate for Gastric Bypass?
Those eligible for gastric bypass surgery are individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or those with a BMI of 35 or higher accompanied by serious obesity-related health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea. Candidates should have struggled with weight loss through diet and exercise and be committed to making significant lifestyle changes post-surgery to maintain weight loss and overall health.
What kind of foods will I be able to eat after my gastric bypass surgery?
After gastric bypass surgery, you will start with a liquid diet, then gradually transition to pureed foods and soft solids before introducing regular, solid foods. It's essential to focus on high-protein, low-sugar, and low-fat options. Small, frequent meals are recommended, and it's important to chew food thoroughly and eat slowly to manage your new stomach capacity.
When can I resume my workout routine?
You can usually start light activities such as walking within a few days after surgery. More strenuous exercise should be avoided for about 4 – 6 weeks post-surgery. We recommend consulting with Dr. Bayron before resuming or starting any new exercise routine to ensure your body is ready and to prevent any complications.
How much weight can I expect to lose with gastric bypass surgery?
Weight loss after gastric bypass surgery varies depending on your pre-surgery weight, dietary habits, exercise, and adherence to medical advice. On average, patients may lose about 60% – 80% of their excess body weight within the first two years. Long-term weight loss and maintenance, however, will depend on lifestyle changes and commitment to new eating habits.
