What Is Acid Reflux Surgery?
If you've ever felt a burn in your chest or throat after eating certain foods, then you already know how uncomfortable acid reflux can be. This sensation, commonly called heartburn, is caused by the regurgitation of stomach acid into the esophagus. While minor cases of acid reflux can be relieved with over-the-counter solutions, frequent or chronic reflux can lead to damage in the lining of the esophagus, a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Acid reflux surgery (or fundoplication) is a procedure designed to tighten the opening between the esophagus and stomach so that digestive acids cannot come back up. Acid reflux surgery at Fernando E Bayron MD involves the placement of a LINX®, a small, flexible ring that goes around the esophagus to provide support and properly close off the stomach. With one minimally invasive procedure, you can once again enjoy the food and activities you love without living in fear of GERD. Schedule an appointment at our practice in Tamarac, FL to learn if you might benefit from acid reflux surgery.
How Does Acid Reflux Surgery Work?
To start, we'll administer general anesthesia to keep you asleep throughout the procedure. Using our advanced laparoscopic equipment, we'll make a series of tiny incisions around the abdomen to create space for surgical tools to be inserted. The scope includes a small camera, which allows our team to work without needing to make a large cut. We'll then install the LINX device around the area where the esophagus and stomach meet. The LINX is made up of titanium beads with magnets inside. As you swallow, the LINX will loosen, allowing food or liquids to pass through before closing again. Recovery after acid reflux surgery is quick, usually taking only a few days for most patients.
What Are the Benefits of Acid Reflux Surgery?
You may not often think about your esophageal health, but for individuals living with GERD, it can be a constant concern. Patients who undergo acid reflux surgery at our Tamarac, FL office enjoy a number of benefits for their health and quality of life, including:
- Reduces uncomfortable symptoms associated with chronic acid reflux
- Noninvasive approach means recovery is generally quick and easy
- Allows you to enjoy foods that may otherwise cause acid reflux issues
- Reduces risk of long-term esophageal damage and conditions, like Barret's esophagus
Am I a Candidate for Acid Reflux Surgery?
If chronic acid reflux or GERD symptoms persist despite medication and lifestyle changes, surgery may be an option. The LINX device is designed for patients seeking a minimally invasive, long-term solution to improve reflux control while preserving normal digestion. You may be a candidate for LINX acid reflux surgery if you:
- Experience frequent heartburn or regurgitation
- Have GERD symptoms that don’t improve with medication
- Want a long-term solution without altering stomach anatomy
- Are in good overall health for a surgical procedure
Prior to scheduling acid reflux surgery, you'll need to undergo a full consultation and evaluation with Dr. Bayron to ensure the procedure is considered safe, appropriate, and effective for your unique needs.
Fernando E Bayron MD Reviews
The Doctor is awesome as well his assistant his knowledge about the hernia and the ways was explained with the necessary to do the procedure was very clear. The only concern is the fact that the waiting to have done the procedure it’s to long specially for who is in pain.
I was shamed by the PA an hour and a 1/2 late on my appointment.Doctor came in the office for a minute.Scheduled me for Surgery. In a recovery room I was told to put on this belt where it till. I see the doctor in a week and. Then they would try and show me an extra one. When I called from a 1 week follow. They want to schedule me for A month? I have other issues that I cannot just lay down and not do nothing for a month if I don't have to. They also said they would send me a prescription for pain. While to this day I still can't get that prescription. And when I wanted to go see the Doctor for the follow-up. He looked at me poked me like the pills. Bury doughboy and told me oh, you're good. And I don't have to see him no more. I would never go to that office again.
Wonderful doctor listens to my needs to help me from day one
Very good, and a lot of human warmth.
